Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Russia. The Chernobyl disaster happened on Saturday, April 26, 1986 at the No. 4 nuclear reactor. The explosion is considered one of the two major disasters rated at a seven, which is the maximum severity.
The accident occurred during a safety test for a RBMK-type nuclear reactor. This is a safety procedure for maintaining cooling water circulation until back-up generators can provide power.
During the test, the cool water stopped circulating so the core of the reactor overheated. A large amount of energy was released all at once. This was immediately followed by an open-air reactor core fire that released considerable airborne radioactive contamination for about nine days, that precipitated into parts of the USSR and Western Europe.
