The reason why the numbers in coding are 1 and 0 is because of binary or base-2. Binary means consisting of two things. Computers operate in binary, which is why there are only two numbers, 1 and 0. Saying a computer operates in binary means that the computer stores and performs calculations using only two numbers. 1 represents true and 0 represents false in Boolean logic. In case you are wondering, Boolean logic is named after the 19th century mathematician, George Boole. Boolean logic is a form of algebra where all values are true or false. The Boolean logic is especially important in binary and computer science because there are only two answers in computers, true and false, but there are also only two numbers in binary, 1 and 0. It is also important because 1 and 0 are the only numbers that computers and their software are able to analyze. So, if you ever find that you need to know base-2, just explain this.
